Hearthstone Restaurant

Breckenridge, Colorado

If you happen to find yourself in the Breckenridge area for any length of time you have to do yourself a favor and visit the Hearthstone Restaurant. Having been a Maitre'd for many years in the past, I am quite particular about my dining experiences. I have been to many so called " fine dining" restaurants in Colorado and have been relatively unimpressed. That is until my wife and I visited the Hearthstone Restaurant a few years ago. This restaurant is truly a treat.

We recently spent the week before Memorial Day in Breckenridge and I wanted to see if the restaurant was as good as I remembered. I wanted to bring four of my children but was unsure of the dining choices for smaller children. I was very pleasantly surprised that they had a very reasonably priced assortment of children's entree's including prime rib which one of my daughter' absolutely loved. The Hearthstone folks treated us very well and we never felt uncomfortable about bringing younger children to dine with us. (I have been to restaurants where families are treated like a pariah.) All of my children loved the experience as well as the food.

All of the dinners are served with a choice of soup or salad, rice or potatoes, and vegetable. If this is too much and you are looking for a lighter fare, they do have a selection of lighter fare items that foregoes the extras. The New England clam chowder was rich and creamy and better tasting to me than any I have ever had before. My wife loved the garlic - granola dressing on her salad. It was very different but very good.

One of my daughters decided to try the Strawberry Pepper Duck which is a pan-seared duck breast over a sauté of strawberries and cracked black pepper. Paired with port glace. She loved it. I had to have a taste as well. The delicate sauce with the tender breast of duck was truly delightful. It was a beautiful dish as well. My wife chose the Crab Filet which is an aged petite tenderloin, topped with Blue Crab and Oliviase. The steak will melt in your mouth and the crab adds a delightful extra flavor. My choice was the Point Reyes Blue New York Strip - a 12 Ounce hand carved steak, topped with Blue Cheese and served with sage demi-glace. Wow! The Blue Cheese was not overpowering but was a great addition to the steak. I have never had anything like it. The Hearthstone knows how to deliver a steak at the temperature you desire (a problem I have found at even some fine steak houses in Denver). We asked for medium rare and it came out perfectly. I am sorry to say that we were not able to try the interesting array of desserts. We just didn't have any room left. Maybe next time because there definitely will be a next time.
